20,000 Birds awaits you at the Baras Bird Sanctuary in Tacurong City

The Baras Bird Sanctuary in Tacurong City has become of one the major tourist attractions in the Province of Sultan Kudarat and Region 12 or SOCCSKSARGEN, more and more tourists are visiting each year.

I was able to visit this bird's haven three times, and of course the most unforgettable was my first visit - that was during the Talakudong Festival 2011 in which I was among the bloggers invited to take part in Tacurong City's celebration of the Talakudong Festival  (read here) .  Included in our itinerary was a tour at the Baras Bird Sanctuary.

It was a tour so unforgettable. Prior to our visit to Tacurong City and  the Baras Bird Sanctuary I haven't heard of it or even read what it's all about.. ang nasa isip ko ay isa itong mala-ZOO na lugar na may mga kulungan ng ibon at ibat-ibang uri ng ibon. And to my surprise when we arrived at the bird sanctuary, there was no birds cages and the place was not even fenced.

Sounds of birds chirping and their throathy "quoks" welcomed us as we enter at the Baras Bird Sanctuary and Mr.Rey Malana, a former seaman and whose family owns the almost 1.3 hectares location of the Baras Bird Sanctuary where his family used to plant with black peppercorn trees before but has set aside these set of farmland to become a birds haven for more than 20,000 migratory birds mostly herons and egrets of diverse breeds.

It was an awesome experience seeing thousands and thousands of birds in such a very small space. The bird's noise and sounds were melodious, it was like they're inviting you to go with them, fly with them and that they're telling you they love the place.

Here's a 2-part video presentation about the Baras Bird Sanctuary produced by the Malana family to give you a bird's eye view of this worth seeing destination in Tacurong City.

So are you a bird lover? Then the Baras Bird Sanctuary should be on top of your list!

Going to the Baras Bird Sanctuary offers not much hassle. Just several kilometers off the national highway it is very much accessible to any type of transportation, but you might want to consider visiting first the City Tourism Office at the Tacurong City Hall, who knows they might give you a free ride to Barangay Baras where thousands of birds awaits you.
